ASVAB score calculator: AFQT percentile and line scores
Type the standard scores printed on your ASVAB score sheet. You get the AFQT percentile from the official conversion table, the category and where you stand against each branch.

Your AFQT score is not an average of your subtests: it is the percentile of one sum, Arithmetic Reasoning plus Mathematics Knowledge plus twice Verbal Expression, read in the conversion table the Department of Defense built from a 1997 national sample of youths aged 18 to 23. A sum of 183 gives AFQT 31, the floor of the Army, the Air Force and the Marine Corps for a high school diploma; 202 gives 50, the start of Category IIIA and of enlistment incentives; 216 gives 65 and 249 gives 93. A candidate with exactly 50 on AR, MK and VE lands at 48, not 50, because the table was built on real scores. Air Force jobs use four other percentiles (Mechanical, Administrative, General, Electrical) from their own tables, the Army and the Marine Corps use line scores with a mean of 100, and the Navy adds standard scores. The calculator above applies all of these from the same inputs, with each table cited.
This site reads your AFQT percentile in the official 1997 conversion table instead of guessing it, adds the Air Force MAGE percentiles and the Army and Marine Corps line scores, and checks each branch minimum on its own recruiting site with the date, with no form and no affiliate link, in English and Spanish.
Minimum AFQT by branch, as each branch publishes it
Read on each recruiting site on the date at the bottom of this page. A minimum is a floor to apply, not a promise of a job: each job adds its own line score requirements.

What the score sheet shows, and what this calculator adds
An ASVAB score report prints a standard score for each subtest: General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Electronics Information (EI), Auto and Shop (AS), Mechanical Comprehension (MC) and Assembling Objects (AO), plus Verbal Expression (VE), a weighted mix of WK and PC. A standard score has a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10 in the reference sample, so 60 means one deviation above the average youth, roughly the top sixth (how standard scores work).
The technical report of the 1997 score scale publishes the tables that turn these standard scores into the numbers recruiters read. Table 2.5 converts the AFQT sum into a percentile; tables C.1 to C.4 do the same for the four Air Force composites; section 2.5 gives the exact formulas of the Marine Corps composites and of the Army GT. This site loads those tables as they are printed, so the percentile you see is the one the table gives for your sum, not a curve fitted by someone else.

Why VE matters twice as much
Because VE enters the AFQT sum with a weight of two, one more point of VE moves the sum by two, while one more point of AR or MK moves it by one. Near the middle of the table, each point of the sum is worth about one percentile, so a three point gain in VE can be worth six percentiles. The study plan page shows this effect on your own scores, and the VE calculator rebuilds VE from WK and PC when your sheet only shows those two.
From AFQT to a job
Passing the minimum of a branch only opens the door. Each job then has its own requirement: the Air Force lists a MAGE percentile for 118 enlisted careers on airforce.com (6 show none), the Army and the Marine Corps state line scores such as GT, and the Navy adds standard scores for each rating. The line score calculator computes all of them at once and the Air Force job finder lists the careers whose published minimums you meet.

How long the ASVAB is
The computer version, the CAT-ASVAB, asks 135 scored questions with 197 minutes of subtest time limits; the paper version asks 225 questions in 149 minutes, according to the Official ASVAB fact sheet. Arithmetic Reasoning gets the most time per question on the CAT: 55 minutes for 15 questions. The test length page gives every subtest and the CAT versus paper page explains why adaptive questions feel harder without changing the scale.
When you can retake it
Official ASVAB sets one calendar month between the first test and the first retest, another month before the second retest, then six months between later retests. A gain of 20 AFQT points or more within six months triggers a confirmation test. Scores remain usable for 2 years. The retest date calculator gives your dates and the PiCAT page covers the version you can take at home before a short verification test.

Practice questions
Every practice question on this site is written by us and says so: none is a real ASVAB item and a share of right answers cannot be turned into a standard score. Use them to find the subtests where you lose time, then check the official sample questions. Start with the eight question practice test, one question per subtest, then open the page of each subtest, such as Arithmetic Reasoning or Word Knowledge.
What this site is not
This site is not the Department of Defense, a branch or a recruiter, and it does not predict the score you will get. It converts scores you already have, quotes minimums from the branch sites with their date and leaves out what it could not check: navy.com refused automated reading, so no Navy minimum is shown. Your MEPS printout prevails over any figure here. The method page lists every table and formula.
Common questions
How is the AFQT score calculated from ASVAB scores?
Add your Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge standard scores and twice your Verbal Expression score, then read that sum in the 1997 conversion table. A sum of 183 gives a percentile of 31, 202 gives 50 and 249 gives 93. The result is a percentile from 1 to 99, the share of the 1997 youth sample that scored at or below you, not a percentage of right answers.
What is a good ASVAB score in 2026?
It depends on the goal. An AFQT of 31 meets the floor of the Army, the Air Force and the Marine Corps with a diploma, and 32 meets the Coast Guard. An AFQT of 50 starts Category IIIA, the level where branches may offer incentives, and 65 starts Category II. For a specific job, the line score that job requires matters more than the AFQT itself.
Why did I get an AFQT below 50 with three scores of 50?
Because the conversion table was built from real scores, not from a symmetric curve. With 50 in AR, MK and VE, the sum is 200 and the 1997 table gives a percentile of 48. The table also jumps unevenly: some sums share a percentile and others skip one. Two more points of VE would bring the sum to 204 and the percentile to 52.
Does this calculator give my official score?
No. Your official scores are the ones printed by the MEPS or the school after your test. This calculator applies the published conversion tables to the standard scores you type, so with the right inputs it gives the same AFQT percentile; the composites marked as estimates may differ from the printout if a service has changed its weights since the 2004 report.
Can I take the ASVAB in Spanish?
No. Official ASVAB explains that the test is given only in English, because service members must work in English and a Spanish version would not measure the same thing. This site explains scores in Spanish, but the practice questions stay in English, like the real test, with explanations in Spanish on the Spanish pages.
What is the minimum ASVAB score for the Navy?
This site does not publish one. On the day of the check, navy.com refused automated reading, and no other official Navy page could be read to confirm the figure. Third party sites print numbers that differ from one another. Ask a Navy recruiter for the current minimum and use the Navy sum calculator to add the standard scores a rating requires.
How long are ASVAB scores valid?
Official ASVAB states that scores can be used for enlistment for up to 2 years from the test date, including scores from a school test if they can be verified as yours. A test given by school staff also needs a short verification test before it counts. After two years, you take the test again.
